The wikipedia article on HIV says:-

an analysis of genetic mutation in primate lentivirus strains that indicates with 95% certainty that the origin of the HIV-1 strain dates to about 1930.

There are also plasma samples taken in 1959 that have been found to contain the virus.

As such I think that even if North Koreas border was 100% closed from the mid 1950s onward the virus was quite possibly already within it's borders.

The fact that they have not detected HIV is almost certainly a lie. However it is probably also the case that they lack the means and resources to diagnose many of the instances that do occur.

North Korea might well not have any AIDS, seeing that it has been effectively cut off from the rest of the world since the late 1950s, before AIDS arose in humans.

South Korea and Japan have some of the lowest rates of infection in the world, primarily because of their immigration policies. It's not hard to see how a country with absolutely zero migration could have avoided the epidemic altogether.

And it's not like AIDS sufferers are going to be trying to sneak into NK to leach off their public health system either.

Just out of interest, how long does it take to find opinions like this on the internet?
How can people believe this stuff when 1/3 of the country needs food aid to survive. The life expectancy is about 60 as opposed to about 75 in the West. Child mortality is significantly higher. And then there's all the human rights abuses.
I've noticed commie ridiculing on the ALS blog before (and I'm all for it) but surely it's hard to find people this deluded?

What are we waiting for??!!! Let's all emigrate to Paradise, a.k.a. North Korea!
There's another benefit as well- all those confusing choices, such as which party to vote for, what sort of bread to buy, what program to watch on TV; all that is not an issue in New Utopia! Stress caused by too much choice is well-known as a medical condition, so you can lead a stress-free life!
No wonder they spontaneously worship their leader as a god on earth!

It reminds me of a time I asked a Singaporean taxi driver how well the Singaporean government looked after disabled people. He told me that he'd never seen any, but he believed they were looked after pretty well. While I could definitely see a bit of black humour in his reply if it had of been a North Korean taxi driver I don't think I would have found it funny!
