ALS: thoughts on freedom

Donate $10 for liberty campaign

Republican Ron Paul recently raised $4 million in a single day, thanks to a pledge that over 17,000 supporters signed. To test the waters and see how effective online fundraising could be for the libertarian cause in Australia, I’ve also decided to set up a pledge. I promise to donate $10 to the LDP if 100 other Australians will do the same. This will raise $1,000 for the party, but maybe someday we will raise millions like Ron Paul!

Please go here to sign the pledge. And do tell your friends. Freedom doesn’t defend itself — we need capable people and plenty of money to get the message out.

UPDATE: After half a day, several people have signed up to donate.

  3. The Ron Paul money bomb will make him a tier one candidate in the Republican money stakes.

  4. November 5th is now finished in the USA and the haul seems to be around $4.5 million. Thats a record breaker and given Ron Pauls previously frugal approach to the campaign he now has loads of cash to spend in the run up to the early primaries. A lot can go wrong still but his odds have now shortened dramatically. Given that he wins most of the republican straw polls all he really needs is public profile and thats what money buys. The Ron Paul message is already travelling well in the republican heartland and he just needs to stay on message and buy a megaphone.

  5. Ron Paul is one of my current heroes of today. He has the guts to stand against the establishment and say “No”. He stands for true individual freedoms.

I have been watching the Guy Fawkes’ Day money bomb closely, and am astonished at its success. This should get the MSM to look around — the US political scene is being pulled out from under their feet.

Even if Paul doesn’t win the nomination, his campaign will have inspired many to follow his footsteps, so the message of true freedom has one, regardless.

  6. Great idea Sukrit.

I would have suggested a PayPal button on the web site, but I guess it’s important people concentrate on the pledge now.

Is there any risk you won’t get 100 people?

  8. I think we’ll get the 100. The question is whether we’ll get it before the election.

However, supporters can help by printing off the ready-made flyers on the pledge site. That way you can tell people about the party and the pledge at the same time.

  13. Good to see that Libertarians have at last discovered the free rider problem. Good luck with your imperfect solution.

Comment by Richard Smart | November 7, 2007

  14. That’s why you should vote for us, Richard, so we can get elected and pass laws and force you to give us money! This situation where people have ‘options’ is just not on!

Comment by Mick Sutcliffe | November 7, 2007

  15. It seems to me that the welfare state has created a whole lot more free rider problems than it ever cured. I’m happy to surrender that imperfect solution for the messy but ultimately better libertarian free society.

You only have two days to get that $100 off me, I’m starting to feel safe.

  19. Good idea, no follow through. I’m shocked at this turn of events.

…..Bugger it I’ll just donate the money now.

For future reference Sukrit, it works a lot better if you are putting up more money than everyone else.
