Interesting discussion on junk food wrt nitrates and nitrites over here:

http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/2008/07/does-banning-hotdogs-and-bacon-make.html

At end Sandy states:

"So, hotdogs and processed meats are condemned as junk food because they contain nitrates, which they don’t, while vegetables are declared health food because they’re free from the same chemicals, which they’re not. It may be awhile before people will get to the point of calling bacon and hotdogs health food."

Yes, the long-term intent (for the kids!) is to stop us driving, but we will always have public transport to fall back on! Oh, joy!

Next law: ban sneezing while driving with underage kids in the back.

What, how stupid of you ! You think we'll be allowed to drive in the future ? Haven't you seen how risky driving is to your health !

And being in the company of underage kids? Society is going to ban that soon too, you know what kind of a threat adults can be to our children !

And sneezing in public, well, thats out of the question too.

It's going to be interesting to see how retailers respond to the ban on displaying cigarettes. It's not as if buying or selling them will be illegal (yet), so obviously there'll be some kind of market mechanism.

I'm guessing we'll see a menu similar to the wine list in restaurants. They might be grouped by tar and nicotine levels, or perhaps regional "appellation controlle" varieties will appear, with separate sections for unfiltered cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco. This might be an opportunity for the cigarette companies to introduce new brands too, since there will be no limit on the length of a menu.

Unintended consequences are the only predictable outcomes when politicians and public servants try to engineer society.

"A professor of Public Health at Sydney University, Simon Chapman, says it is a huge step forward for tobacco control."

I think this guy made a typo. This is not about tobacco control, this is about people control. This is about controlling the lives and decisions which people make for themselves.

The inexpensive food places in Los Angeles which are already established will absolutely love the ban on competition. Sure, blame it on obesity, more money for them. If I remember correctly the original wording on fast food was horribly vague and is much more of a protectionist scheme than a public health issue. You can practically give meth to children here if people are convinced it will make them skinny.

Yeah, fast food exists, and eating it constantly is not a good idea, but in moderation and with the wave of healthier items over the last few years won't kill you. LA can be a hectic place and sometimes you need a meal in a hurry and don't want to blow $20 at some expensive place. Yeah $6 in Taco Bell Double Cheesy Tacos is a quick 1500 calories (1500 DREAMY calories) and sometimes you are in the mood for an Egg McMuffin, and when the Egg McMuffin craving sets in there is no acceptable substitution. The key is self control. If you have a lifestyle that is very active the extra calories won't do much damage.

The smoking thing is also madness. Cigarette companies are one of the few industries which sell to a clientele of addicts (no not compulsive, nicotine is a full blown addiction). It doesn't matter where you keep the ciggs. Put them away, keep them behind counters, hell require customers go into the back room and buy them. It does not matter. Their customers are addicts. If they don't mind throwing $5 a day away on a retarded habit which is linked to severe health problems and causes them to reek of smoke I doubt they will mind buying them from a slightly different location in the store.

Both of these gestures have one thing in common. It is the government sending out a message. No, not that eating excessive fast food is unhealthy, or that smoking is bad. People already know that. The message is simple. "Citizen. You are too stupid, to weak, and to small to handle freedom. You are a child. We will make decisions for you and manipulate your economic lives accordingly because you are far too stupid to do it yourself" this isn't people wanting the greater good, this is just an overly elitist attitude that the peons need to be governed for their own good. This is a total slap in the face.

Now that you've mentioned it, JC, you've ruined it! I just realised- the cops could be reading this blog! I love all policemen, myself, so I'm not worried, but some of you might be in trouble!
Of course, a few years of moonlighting might mean I can buy as many cops as I need, but I'm not at that stage yet.

I wonder if the tobacco industry is paying them to do this? After all, alcohol prohibition in America strengthened the bootleggers, and allowed them to become monopoly suppliers. The aura of illegality will attract the young, just as it does now! "Breathe-Easies" could be the next big business!
Smart libertraders will now start taking note of heavy smokers, and deliver their favourite vice to their door, for a commission, of course! This could be the next business of the future! Anti-Nannies of the world, unite!
