Not Evil, Just Wrong: A Call To Arms!

There can be no doubt that every single Australian libertarian should be opposed to Penny Wong’s ETS. All of us should be doing anything in our power to stop this monstrosity from this job-killing, economy-destroying big government tax from becoming law. If passed, it will set a new precedent in government meddling right down to the household level, pave the stage for greater power to unelected bureaucrats, and will achieve nothing for the environment. Even if believe in anthropogenic global warming, there is no way you can believe this is the best way to proceed.

With a Senate vote on Australia’s economic death-sentence only a month away, now is the time for action.

Fortunately, in a little under 3 weeks, a groundbreaking major film will premiere worldwide that tackles the human cost of global warming head on. On October 18 Not Evil Just Wrong will premiere all over the world. And this will be a game-changer.

Made by Greener Horizon Films, producers of the critically acclaimed “Mind Your Own Business” (which many of you may have seen on its Australian tour), this is the first major movie on the true cost of global warming hysteria.

The Australian Libertarian Society is an affiliate of Not Evil Just Wrong, and every sale of this film through this webpage will directly help the ALS.

Reminder: Festival of Dangerous Ideas

Hey peoples… just a reminder about the upcoming Festival of Dangerous Ideas. I will be talking at 5:45pm on Sunday 4 October with the topic “the old should pay for themselves”. I’m sure there are going to be plenty of trendy neo-socialists there to throw tomatoes, so it would be good to have a few libertarians to even things out.

There are plenty of other interesting talks at the festival, including talks by Oliver Hartwich and Cassandra Wilkinson on Capitalism, Ray Evans on Child Labour and various other talks.

The Christopher Hitchens talk (Religion Poisons Everything) has sold out, but I have one spare ticket (free) for whoever does the best job of bribing me. If you’re interested, e-mail me on john.humphreys99@gmail.com.

Sexing up monetary policy

Amazon sells books. Currently in the top ten is a book by Ted Kennedy. No real surprise given the surname and given all the publicity generated by the fact that he just died. There is also a book by Dan Brown. Also no real surprise given that he has a track record writing best selling novels. Currently at number eight is a book about monetary policy by Ron Paul called “End the Fed”. Okay Ron Paul has some profile so it makes some sense, but who on earth reads books about monetary policy? Is this really the stuff of mass market appeal. Does Joe Average really care about who controls the money supply?  Maybe he does.

Nationals discover cause of financial crisis; me.

“Jim, your views are as near as I can tell at the extreme end of the spectrum and you certainly have been caught up in the free market view of the world. Sadly we have followed your path for much too long and the world is now reconsidering its axioms as a result of excessive freedoms given to huge banks based on your very ideas.” (Comment on Agmates.)

National Party Senator, Barnaby Joyce has a home page on “Agmates,” a social networking site, and has a thread going railing against the dominance of Coles and Woolworth’s in the supermarket business.

Not being a great fan of regulation I got involved, resulting in the above comment from one of the members of the forum.

Barnaby tends to have a fair sort of fan club going for him, probably because he bucks the system and the party line on occasions. Because of these stands he tends to appeal to those who are disillusioned with the current Tweedeldums and Tweedeldumses style of government and opposition. With the major political parties we have in Australia, elections are a case of “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Regrettably I have serious doubts that he will make much of a difference in the long run as while he is more independently minded than most members of his party, his philosophy is rooted in the big government, nanny state camp.
