Out Campaigning in Bennelong

I’m the Liberal Democrat (LDP) candidate for the federal seat of Bennelong in this 2010 election. This is made somewhat easier by the fact that I actually live in Bennelong. Today I figured I’d stroll down to the shops and see if anybody recognised me. Alas nobody came up to me to congratulate me on my pre-selection or to ask my views on immigration policy or tax rates. Me and the kids (my two eldest) soon gave up on the project and thought we would go and get some lunch and milkshakes.

Along the way we spotted a famous Australian tennis player. This guy was willing to be friendly and went to some effort to make me feel important. We had a bit of a chat about tennis. I asked him if he still plays tennis and I can confirm he does. He seems like a nice bloke so I didn’t bother him with my political aspirations. I wished him well and we went and had our milkshakes. I’m sure that once he figures out who I am he will surely vote for me.

Thanks to the nice lady wearing the Liberal Party shirt who took the picture for us. Stay tuned for further installments from Bennelong. I’ll see if I can get a picture with a famous ABC journalist or some such thing.

  1. Very good Terje. A lovely touch of informality and understatement. What flavour milkshakes did the boys have? These things are important! Next time, maybe wear the “VOTE 1 LDP” badge.

  4. Sure we have badges. We are a political party! I did some up for the booth workers in the Gippsland by-election and some more for the Higgins/Bradfield by-elections. Still have a bundle left. You can do your own if you like. Call me and I’ll arrange for some, or give you the makers name.
    Anyone else???

  5. Ummm, so are you planning on doing any campaigning this election?

  6. Jake – no big plans. However if you want to be my campaign manager I’m open to suggestions.

  7. I’m assuming that’s facetious however I’m still working on finding out what’s happening in the ACT.

  8. If you want to be a candidate then get on with it because the clock is ticking.

  9. Jake, there might still be a vacancy in Eden-Monaro if you want to get a nomination form in before close of business tomorrow…

  10. I’m helping out the Libs in Eden-Monaro at the moment. The people I’ve talked to don’t seem that happy about Mike Kelly at the moment. That, and it has a razor thin margin…

  11. Good luck, Steve and Terjep! Optimistically, what will be your first member’s bill, TerjeP, when allowed to speak? Will you call for all taxes to be immediately repealed, or for an immediate end to union momopolies? Or are these your second-term objectives?

  12. I think abolishing income tax inside a decade is achievable if we freeze government spending in real per capita terms.

  13. Good Luck Terje

  14. Yeah, second that call for good luck! Hopefully we get our first member in this election, I know it’s a long shot, but hey, we’ve got to start somewhere

  15. I think it’s very brave of you to ‘out’ yourself in the campaign, TerjeP! If libertarians would just be brave enough to confess their political inclinations, maybe one day we’ll even be allowed to marry each other! That’s a far-off time, I know, but it’s made possible by incredibly brave libbers like you!
Maybe that is the tone to take! Let’s be proud of believing in things like a gold standard- We can talk about Gold Pride!

  16. The LDP website is down. If someone has a copy of the campaign materials on the website could they please email them to me. I was thinking of hitting up Queanbeyan this weekend.

  17. Jake, as far as I’m aware the website should be up sometime tomorrow afternoon.

  19. So how has the campaigning been going, TP? Do anyones recognise you, and want to shake your hand?

Comment by 'Nuke' Gray | August 3, 2010

  20. Lots of people are encouraging without even asking about policies.

    Comment by TerjeP | August 3, 2010

  21. And when you explain your policies, are they still supportive?
