Interested to read the update on Sue Abbott and the bike helmet saga in this weekends Sydney Morning Herald. Here is our story with even more serious ramifications. Please note that my husband was fined by Surfers Paradise police an area constantly in the news thanks to chronic serious crime.
My husband, a Parkinson’s sufferer, has just received a summons because he refused to pay a fine for riding his bike without a helmet. He even had a medical exemption as he has had Deep Brain Stimulus surgery and the helmet causes pain as well as the risk of damage to the sub dermal wires that lead to the electrodes in his brain – which can result in infection in the brain. As he can no longer play tennis, surf or walk far, biking was his only form of exercise and getting out in the fresh air. Exercise is essential for Parkinson’s patients . We sought legal advice and were told that the exemption didn’t meet “the letter of the law”. As DBS.is still a quite rare and radical operation, it would seem his GP was unaware of the “letter of the law” . We are refusing to pay the fine in order to help others in my husband’s position. Anyone who also thinks this is a crazy situation please feel free to contact the Queensland Minister of Police in Australia and/or the Surfers Paradise police station
